Hetta is the main village in Enontekiö municipality, which is known for reindeer husbandry. Located in Lapland, Enontekiö occupies a large and very sparsely populated area near Swedish and Norwegian borders. Hetta hosts the Fell Lapland Visitor Centre, which presents the genuine Nomadic Sámi Culture, the diversity of northern nature and the history of tourism in Enontekiö. The Visitor Centre is also a starting point for many hiking and skiing trails in the...

Kalaja trail at Southern Konnevesi National Park

Southern Konnevesi National Park

First sunny and warm day of spring blessed our trip to the Southern Konnevesi National Park in Rautalampi in the beginning of April. It took less than 1½ hours to drive from Jyväskylä on spring roads. Before the trip we checked beforehand how the Kalaja trail and road conditions will be like. It was still early spring and we thought there might be plenty of snow on the trail and that we might have difficulties accessing the parking lot.

We started our trip by checking and packing all the gear needed, and our guides prepared and packed all water and food for the...

Find your own lucky stone at Lampivaara Amethyst Mine

Lampivaara Amethyst Mine

As children, we have all found treasure in the most bizarre places. Sometimes it probably was an amazing stick, a slimy toad, or even a shiny rock. However, most of us forget about our dreams of finding jewels and precious stones when we grow up. Cranberries are the world’s healthiest food

Cranberries freshly picked

Cranberries are said to be the world's healthiest food. This is of course open for debate, but nobody can deny that cranberries have very good fiber content, very low sugar content, and they are known for their concentration of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory phytonutrients. This superfood grows in bogs and the best part is that in Finland anyone can go and pick them.

I have recently been picking cranberries at Torronsuo National Park. In some years bogs have red mats of cranberries, but...

Kyynäränharju is a scenic ridge in Liesjärvi National Park

Kyynäränharju

Kyynäränharju ridge is one of the top attractions in Liesjärvi national park, which is located in Tammela, approximately 95 km from Helsinki. Kyynäränharju is a low sandy shored ridge, which separates Lake Kyynärä and Lake Liesjärvi from one another. There are several hiking trails in Liesjärvi National Park and they depart from multiple locations. I recommend for example Pirttilahti parking area, from where you can reach Kyynäränharju easily.

A large part of the Liesjärvi...

Torronsuo National Park, Finland’s deepest bog

Torronsuo National Park in Tammela Finland

Torronsuo National Park is the closest national park to where I grew up and I have visited it many times since it was opened in 1990. It is one of my favorite locations to go for a walk on the duckboards and I like to go cross-country skiing on the bog in the winters. I have my secret spots for cranberry picking and I occasionally like to climb to one of its birdwatching towers at Kiljamo.

On a good winter during the months of January-March Torronsuo might have up to 45 kilometers of...
