Clear-water Lake Iso-Melkutin is hikers and divers’ treasure

Iso-Melkutin lake

Lake Iso-Melkutin is a popular scuba-diving destination in Southern Finland because of its clear water and underwater ridge. It's also a beautiful hiking and trekking area where I like to go at least once every summer. The trail around the lake is about 7 kilometers long and easy to follow.

The Iso-Melkutin is located in Räyskälä village in the municipality of Loppi. It has been created at the end of ice age...

Spring flowers at Vaisakko Nature Reserve in Salo

Vaisakko Nature Reserve

This is the perfect time of the year to head out in the nature to Vaisakko Nature Reserve in Salo municipality. I don't think I have seen so many flowers blooming in April in Finland ever before! I had a business meeting in Salo, and I was thinking about combining some nature travels to my trip. It was sunny and +21C, the warmest day so far this year, so it was a perfect weather for a little afternoon walk. I had heard about Vaisakko before, my friends had been...

Cyclist admiring the sunset in Kopparnäs

The Kopparnäs-Störsvik recreation area 50 kilometres West of Helsinki is one of the biggest outdoor destinations in the Western Uusimaa region. If you are looking for versatile outdoor opportunities in the capital region, but want an alternative to the often crowded Nuuksio area, the Meiko recreation area in Kirkkonummi is something for you. It has three marked routes, but is also very accessible for off-track activities, such as berry picking or even snowshoeing!

Aulanko nature reserve has something for all

Aulanko was created as a forest park which was later turned into the first national urban park of Finland. This vast yet accessible greenery in Hämeenlinna (about 1h from Helsinki) offers a possibility for enjoying the lake waters, hiking in the forests, skiing down the slopes of steep cliffs, and following in the footsteps of adventurers (and even bears) to see stunning landscapes. In short, it has something for everyone. I've visited Aulanko several times both...

Snowshoeing in the Meiko wilderness

Snowshoeing tracks

As our winters have become more unpredictable especially in Southern Finland, one has to make use of every opportunity for winter sports. This winter the ‘real’ winter with snow and subzero temperatures started around Christmas and skiing tracks as well as ice skating rinks have been crowded ever since. I have also enjoyed the wilderness with snow shoes, which seems to be on the rise as a winter hobby.

My secret spot for cross-country skiing in Lohja, Finland

Cross country skiing in Lohja

Cross-country skiing is a very popular hobby in Finland, and when the snow situation allows, many Finns head outdoors to skiing tracks around the country. For example, Torronsuo bog is good place for the cross-country skiing. It is popular especially on the weekends when the parking lot gets full, but as it has long skiing tracks on the bog, it doesn't usually feel crowded. While Torronsuo provides very flat skiing tracks, my secret skiing spot Keräkankare has hills...

Finland’s bolt bunker Salpa line and fortifications at Luumäki

Salpalinja Salpa Line Luumäki Finland

I have driven past a sign pointing to Salpa-asema dozens of times on my way but only a few years ago I stopped to explore this area in southeastern Finland for the first time. You don't immediately understand the significance of the area because the area is very humble and unassuming but it is a nature area where one of the most important Finnish defences were build during World War II.

At first, it...

Giant's Bath Tub or the Jättiläisen kuhnepytty giant's cauldron in Askola, Finland.

A lot of people will know the story about Jack and the Beanstalk. When the seeds grow into a stalk, Jack climbs up and ends up in the house of the giant. In some versions, Jack is hidden in the giant's kettle but the giant smells him in his house. This story really comes...
